Temporary living

Terminology and concepts.

What is temporary living?

In simple terms, temporary living means that someone does not live in their own home for a temporary period of time, but somewhere else. This period can be a few weeks or several months, or even one to two years. Often, it is professional reasons that make a longer stay away from home necessary. And these (business) travellers naturally also need an accommodation at their new place of residence.

However, neither a separate (second) flat nor a classic hotel room is suitable for this group of people. The effort to find and furnish a new flat would be too great. A long hotel stay without the possibility of cooking for once and constantly living in a cramped room is also not optimal and also costly.

Residential concepts have therefore been developed using furnished apartments and serviced apartments that are ideally suited to the needs of long-term travellers and combine the best of both worlds.

Temporary living thus occupies a "sandwich position" between the hotel market and the classic tenant-apartment-landlord relationship. Due to increased global mobility, temporary living in a furnished or serviced apartment has gained significant awareness and popularity in recent years. And so, within these two areas, there is now an enormous range of overnight accommodation offers with very different characteristics.

The concepts differ in particular with regard to the type of property, the length of stay and the scope of services offered.

At the same time, numerous terms have become established around this topic, which are explained in detail below and on the following pages. This is because some of the terms are not always used correctly or consistently, which can sometimes make it difficult to understand due to the complexity of the topic of temporary living.

Temporary living in serviced apartments

Temporary living in serviced apartments is currently the most popular form of accommodation for business travellers. Depending on the equipment and level of service offered by the accommodation, a further differentiation is made between apartments with service and aparthotel. The exact distinguishing features between the two types of establishments are contrasted in this blog post (in German language).

Serviced apartments are furnished accommodation units and are considered a special segment of the hotel industry. They make up 99 % of the offer on the Apartmentservice booking portal.

Therefore, the specifics and advantages of serviced apartments are presented in detail in a separate article.

In addition, the area of serviced accommodation has steadily developed in recent years in so-called living concepts. These include corporate housing, micro living and student living. Across concepts, co-living has found its way into temporary living. Apartmentservice also has some providers offering furnished apartments and rooms from this area listed on the booking portal.

For whom is temporary living suitable?

If you are new to a city, alone or with your family, and have to wait to move into your final home, if you are living in a different location for a limited period of time (up to 6 months) due to a project, or are staying there for an extended business trip or city break, then serviced apartments are ideal for you. You do not have to do without hotel-like services during your stay (e. g. cleaning service, linen change). The apartments are fully and comfortably furnished and allow for self-catering with a fully equipped kitchenette. Cancellation terms are comparatively flexible.

If you do not require service or are looking for long-term accommodation, then serviced accommodation may be for you. Find out more about it here.

No matter what you choose, you can always be sure that our offers are professionally operated serviced apartments, which have been carefully selected by us. The possibility of self-catering is given by an obligatory kitchen or kitchenette with cooking facilities, refrigerator and sink in any case.
